LVIII. FELLOW-TRAVELLERS.

Two surviving copies of the Selection contain annotations indicating Samuel McClelland was the author of this very popular spiritual hymn. One surviving copy bears ink marks that seem to flag it as a favorite text. It is found in at least twenty music manuscripts, both eastern and western. A few later music manuscripts contain conflicting attributions to Richard McNemar or Samuel Hooser.

Issachar Bates frequently used the phrase “fellow traveler” in his writings and correspondence, particularly in reference to his close friend Benjamin Seth Youngs. The phrase seems to have been a popular figure of speech among the Shakers, playing on the simile of one’s spiritual life being like a journey.
